Downloading long url using wget

In some situations we need download required files using long urls with wget

Use following wget syntax for this purpose :


wget -O[output file] '[long url]'

Example : Downloading Java bin file

How to access intra web services using SSH server as proxy

To access internal office web services from remote location (home or any other places) you can use office SSH server as proxy

Prerequisites :

* a ssh login account on a server

Linux :

ssh -ND 9999 myaccount@sshserver.com

Windows :

Download plink from http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/plink.exe

Open command line terminal
plink.exe -N -D 9999 myaccount@sshserver.com

you need to replace the "myaccount" with your username on your SSH server and sshserver.com with your server domain name or IP address.

When you execute either of those commands, you'll be prompted for your password. After you authenticate, nothing will happen. The -N tells ssh not to open an interactive prompt, so it will just hang there, waiting. That's exactly what you want.

Set Firefox to use SOCKS proxy

Once your proxy's up and running, configure Firefox to use it. From Firefox's Tools menu, choose Options, and from the Advanced section choose the Network tab. Next to "Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet" hit the "Settings" button and enter the SOCKS information, which is the server name (localhost) and the port you used (in the example above, 9999.)

jNetMap — a cross-platform network mapping tool

jNetMap is a cross-platform network mapping application. jNetMap will ping all registered devices every x minutes, updating it's status according to the result of the ping. Alternatively you can also monitor a specific port, such as port 80 for webservers. Available devices are green, unavailable devices are red. Gray means "unknown" and orange "not found".

How to monitor users’ logins for a linux server ?

We can monitor user logins using command line tools last, lastb and lastlog .

last and lastb commands disply a record of when users last logged in to the host and a record of bad user logins.

last command without any options will print a report of the last logins to the host. last records also contains reboot entries

The lastb command produces the same style of report but lists only those logins that were "bad". In other words, it lists those logins in which an incorrect password was entered, or some other error resulted in failure to login.

The lastlog command displays a report that shows the login status of all users on your host, including those users who have never logged in.

you can use grep to filter required output

# lastlog | grep -v ' **Never logged in**'

Export entries from OpenLDAP

In order to export the entire LDAP directory from OpenLDAP, you have to run slapcat. This needs to be done with the LDAP service stopped.

Port Forwarding using SSH

Using SSH port forwarding we can access various kinds of TCP based servers ( i.e HTTPD, SMTP, POP, IMAP, etc.) across a firewall that prevents direct access.

Command :

 $  ssh < remote_server > -L< local free listener port>:localhost:< remote listener port>

Example Scenario :

IF you have ssh access on a remote machine(say rhost) but, you don't have any other access including http. If you want view some web pages which are hosted on same remote machine(i.e rhost) through http request, then apply following "ssh port forward" command.

 $  ssh rhost -L8888:localhost:80 

here rhost is remote host/server name (replace with your server name)
8888 is free port on your machine 
80 is default listener port on remote machine.

now you can access web pages which are hosted on rhost machine using "http://localhost:8888".

Here’s how I installed JDK on Centos

"> Download

Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and download the desired file.

Extract the .bin file

[root@localhost tmp]# ./j2re-1_4_2_15-linux-i586-rpm.bin

Install the .rpm file
